Finding Opportunity Application Packages on Grants.gov

1.

Go to the Grants.gov website. [http://www.grants.gov]
Note to Mac users: Newer versions of Safari don't seem to work currently for finding opportunities; try FireFox or another browser.

Choose the Find Grant Opportunities link (in the red menu on the left side) to search for the application for the particular funding opportunity you wish to apply for.

2.

Your search choices include Basic, Advanced, and others and there are search tips, as well. On the Basic Search screen, you can search by keyword or if you know the opportunity number, you can fill that in. In our example, we used the Funding Opportunity Number (FON), 06-572, to find an NSF grant announcement.

Click on search . . .

3.

. . to get the funding opportunity "Synopsis" page. To get to the Grants.gov application link, click on "How to Apply" at the far right of that screen.

That takes you to. . .

4.

. . .the Grant Application screen where you select "download" at the far right.

[If there is no download link it means that opportunity does not yet accept applications via Grants.gov.]

Click on "Download."

5.

Now you get this screen.

Click on Download Application Package to put the file on your computer.

Be sure to download the instructions, as well. Usually a pdf or .doc, the instructions include important information for filling out the application. Note that here you can also sign up for updates on that announcement. This way you will receive changes made in the announcement.

6.

The package should now be on your computer wherever you specify downloaded files should appear. Common locations are "My Documents" or Desktop. The application package extension is .xfd

The icon looks like this:

Downloading may trigger an Acrobat error message. You can ignore that.

7.

Now you are ready to begin to fill out the application. Open PureEdge Viewer/ Forms Viewer or Adobe Reader 8.1.1, depending on which type of application packet it is.
