Subject: Grants.gov and eResearch Proposal Management Update

It’s been quite some time since I last wrote to you concerning our transition to the Grants.gov submission process. Though that transition continues, with this note I will switch the focus of this e-mail group to the University’s eResearch Proposal Management system, or eRPM.

I would like to give you a brief status report on the development of that system and encourage you to complete a short survey about the proposal management process in general.

This message contains information on:
1. Progress of eResearch Proposal Management (eRPM) system development
2. eRPM baseline survey
3. Grants.gov email group name changing

** Progress of eResearch Proposal Management (eRPM) system development

Since October 2006, Michigan Administrative Information Services (MAIS), OVPR/DRDA and key individuals from the campus research community have been developing the eResearch Proposal Management system to assist UM investigators in applying for and managing research funds. Cathy Handyside from MAIS and I have been serving as eRPM Co-Project Managers.

In mid 2008, we expect to provide you with:

Proposal Approval Form that accommodates electronic routing and approval for all external funding requests and the actual preparation and submission of grant applications via Grants.gov.

Data warehouse environment that acts as a repository for all your proposal and award information and merges existing PRISM data with future eRPM data that allows both predefined and customized reporting.

Regular updates on our progress have been and will continue to be shared at Research Administrators Network and Research Associate Dean meetings as well as articles in the University RECORD.

To support the eRPM system, a Research Unit Liaison program has been created in order to share information between U-M schools and colleges and the eRPM project staff. The liaisons will keep their units informed about the eRPM design and development, provide feedback to the eRPM project team, and identify faculty and staff members who will need training.

To find out who is your Research Unit Liaison or for more about eResearch Proposal Management system (e.g., presentations, project descriptions, design teams), go to: http://eresearch.umich.edu/

** Complete eRPM baseline survey

The eRPM project team has a commitment to design a high-quality system. To measure our results and to see what improvements will be needed to the system, we are surveying the campus research community now in December 2007 and after the eRPM system is released.

Please take a few minutes to complete our brief survey, hopefully, before the Holiday break. To complete the survey, go to:

** Grants.gov email group name changing

Consistent with the focus change I mentioned at the top of this message, the name of this e-mail group has changed from “Grants.gov.info” to “eRPM-info”.

This group will now be used to send updates about the eRPM system in addition to needed information in the short term about Grants.gov submission issues.

If you have questions, please contact my partner Cathy Handyside (MAIS) at chandys@umich.edu or me.
