OVPR Funds for Research and Scholarship
Application, Review, Award Details
|
Required Signatures
OVPR requires the signatures of the department or unit head and the dean or director of the unit. In schools and colleges with research associate deans, they may sign in this space. Please route the proposal application to the appropriate office for signatures well in advance of any deadlines. Research associate deans and deans are responsible for any internal process that may exist when applying to OVPR. Contact those offices for clarification.
Applications will not be processed by OVPR until all appropriate signatures are obtained.
Matching or Sharing Funds
For OVPR programs, securing matching funds or cost sharing from the unit, school/college, department or outside sources is viewed as an important sign of commitment to and support of the application. OVPR requires a minimum 50% match for the total costs of the project. Non-allowable costs listed under funding restrictions (below) are not to be included in matching funds. Joint OVPR and BMRC applicants for maintenance support must follow BMRC's requirement of 1:1 matching funds from the PI's department.

Reviews
Awards will be reviewed for by peer faculty. This step may be waived in the case of proposals with comparable external review.

Award Notification:
OVPR is committed to responding to faculty requests for support as expeditiously as possible. Expect a decision within 8 weeks of submission to OVPR. Late applications may not be processed with ones received for a bi-monthly deadline so please allow additional time for notification.
Applicants can facilitate expeditious review by providing complete information, all required signatures, and by suggesting qualified, independent reviewers.
Note: The review process for large, complex, or unusual proposals may take longer. We advise advance consultation. Peer review delays are common during the summer. If we anticipate delays, we will give applicants an estimate of the revised decision date.
Administration of Awards: For most awards of $5,000 or more, a project/grant an account will be established in the recipient's academic unit for a specified amount, duration and purpose. Regular university policies and procedures are applicable to the expenditure of funds, and the recipient is responsible for working with the appropriate staff in the academic unit to arrange for good stewardship of the funds.
Award amounts are final. Overruns and disallowances are the responsibility of the individual recipient and academic unit. Each award stipulates an expiration date, after which any balance remaining is returned to OVPR.
Any changes in budget items or project period must first be approved by OVPR. Contact Cynthia Avery, avery@umich.edu, for assistance.
Faculty may not retain the award if they leave the University of Michigan.
Frequency
To equitably distribute research and scholarship funds across the campuses, OVPR discourages more than one application by any one individual generally during a span of one year, unless there are special circumstances.
