Howard Hughes Medical Institute :: Precollege Science Education Initiative

The University of Michigan has been invited to submit a grant proposal to the 2007 Precollege Science Education Initiative for Biomedical Research Institutions. This initiative encourages research institutions to engage in outreach to precollege students, teachers, and the community. Approximately 300 nonprofit institutions have been invited to apply and each invited institution may submit only one proposal.
Applicants may partner with an institution that has a well-developed outreach capability in order to stimulate new and innovative connections between researchers and community-based institutions. Proposals should:
- Clearly identify the target population(s) and any partners, schools, or other collaborators,
- Consider designing district-wide programs rather than programs that reach only a subset of local schools
- Describe the appropriateness of the project and how it fits into the institution's overall mission,
Include one or more of the following components:
- Student Activities
- Teacher Professional Development
- Outreach to Family and Community
- Postsecondary Students and Postdoctoral Fellows
- Multicomponent and Other Activities
- Include an assessment plan

For consideration as the institutional nominee, submit the following electronically in a single file, PDF format by Friday, July 7, 2006:
- 3-5 page proposal outline, responsive to the RFP, addressing the program objectives; program assessment and evaluation method to be used; and how the project fits into UM's overall mission
- NIH formatted biosketch(s)
- Nominating letter from dean(s) or department chair(s)
