HHMI has announced an initiative to "bring the excitement of research to undergraduate education in the biological sciences and other scientific fields", the 2006 HHMI Professors Competition. UM is one of 100 research and doctoral universities invited to nominate up to two faculty researchers for this competition. Awards of $1 million each will be provided over a four-year period to up to 20 individuals. Faculty in the biological, biochemical, bioinformatics, and biomedical sciences are eligible, as well as those in subfields of physics, chemistry, and engineering that relate to the biomedical sciences. Focus will be primarily on tenured faculty members with established research and educational programs in the biological sciences who are prepared to significantly expand their undergraduate educational activities.

Applicants are encouraged to propose new ideas for undergraduate teaching that build on the research strengths and interests of their laboratories.

Some of the Proposal Evaluation Criteria:

The Office of the Vice-President for Research will coordinate the internal review process, through an interdisciplinary panel of faculty researchers, to select up to two nominees from among the internal applications that are received.

For the internal competition, candidates should provide:

1. CURRICULUM VITAE (no more three pages): Include educational and research training background, teaching and research activities, awards, publications, and other relevant information.

2. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY (one page): Briefly describe the proposed project.

3. RESEARCH SUMMARY (one page): Summary of research accomplishments and contributions to his/her discipline.

4. UNDERGRADUATE EDUCATION (one-page): Summary of applicant's accomplishments.

5. LETTER OF NOMINATION (no more than two pages): From department chair.
