Application Limits:
Independent Component:
According to NEA: an independent component must be a unit that is both programmatically and administratively distinct from the parent organization, have it's own staff and budget, and generally have an independent board or other advisory group that has significant responsibility for oversight and management. Academic departments of colleges and universities do not qualify as independent components.
If you plan to apply as an "independent component" of the University, please contact Jamie Saville at jsaville@umich.edu. We will need confirmation of this eligibility status from NEA prior to submission.
Internal Competition: To determine which UM proposal will be submitted on behalf of the University, the Office of the Vice President for Research will conduct an internal competition, based on a 2 page proposal abstract. Deadline for abstracts is January 30, 2004. Please see Internal competition guidelines below.

Match Requirement
All grants require a match of at least 1 to 1. For example, if an organization receives a $10,000 grant, the total project costs must be at least $20,000 and the organization must provide at least $10,000 toward the project from nonfederal sources.

The guidelines include contact phone numbers for areas specialists within NEA. We strongly advise speaking with an NEA specialist prior to submitting an application to the internal competition. Evidence of such a conversation should be referred to in your abstract.

Selection Criteria:
According to the National Endowment for the Arts guidelines, the University of Michigan is limited to submitting one application only as the parent organization (with exceptions for independent components and/or consortium applications). Therefore, the Office for Vice President for Research requests that interested applicants submit by Thursday, February 27, 2002 the following:
(A) a one page abstract describing the proposed work, the category, and the NEA deadline (below) including any consortium partners proposed, and
(B) a one page budget with proposed direct costs including an explanation of funding sources to meet the required match/cost sharing.

After a committee review, the nominated applicant(s) will be notified by March 7th. Applicant(s) will submit full NEA applications through DRDA to meet the category's respective NEA deadline (see below).
Funding: Between $5,000 and $150,000; most grant awards are generally between $5,000 and $100,000
