Instrument Development & Acquisition Solicitation (NSF 08-540)
Internal Deadline: March 3, 2008

See the NSF announcement (http://www.nsf.gov/pubs/2008/nsf08540/nsf08540.htm)

First and more importantly, as soon as possible tell DRDA of your intention to submit a preproposal. Send your intentions to: fastlane-admin@umich.edu

Limit on Number of Proposals:

  1. ) Four (4) preliminary proposals may be submitted by an institution either as a single institution or as a lead institution in a multi-institution preliminary proposal. Preliminary Proposals due: April 24, 2008
  2. ) Three (3) full proposals may be submitted (By Invitation Only based on the outcome of the preliminary proposal competition) by an institution either as a single institution or lead institution in a multi-institution full proposal. Full Proposal due : October 20, 2008
  3. ) A multi-institutional proposal is defined as one that has at least one co-PI at a different academic institution than that of the PI, a subaward to a different academic institution than that of the PI, or both.
  4. ) For IGERT Resource Center proposals: There is a limit of 1 proposal per submitting institution/organization. There will be no preliminary proposals. Full Proposal due : April 24,2008

**IGERT Resource Center: For this solicitation, there will also be one award for an IGERT resource center. The intent of the IGERT resource center is to provide the IGERT program overall and the IGERT projects with the ability and web-based platform to share and implement best practices across all aspects of IGERT; share curriculum advancements, and build on achievements of all the projects to support information and knowledge that can be shared among projects and with the broader community.

Limit on Number of Proposals per PI:

One may participate as PI or co-PI in only one proposal submission. That restriction applies to preliminary proposals as well as full proposals. A PI or co-PI on one proposal may serve as non-senior personnel on other proposals.

****NOTICE: The following items are major revisions to the previous program solicitation:
  1. The need for transformative research in emerging areas of science/technology/engineering/mathematics as a foundation for training is further emphasized.
  2. The program solicitation specifies that an IGERT award may be renewed only once and will be reviewed in a competition including new and other renewal proposals. The criteria for renewals have been further elaborated to make clear that renewal proposals must document the excellence and achievements of the original award as well as specify how a renewal will provide added value and innovation in each of the critical elements of IGERT. In addition, in the letter of commitment the institution must address why a renewal is needed, what will be sustained and how it will be sustained.
  3. For institutions that have received one or more previous IGERT awards the institutional letter of commitment must include an explicit explanation of the impact of previous IGERT award(s) and the intended impact of another award on graduate education and interdisciplinary science at the institution.
  4. The program solicitation now makes it clear that trainees must be made aware of the global dimensions of their interdisciplinary theme, whether or not funding for international collaboration is requested. Examples of acceptable costs for international collaborations are given.
  5. The need for cyber-enablement for each IGERT site is outlined as well and acceptable costs for cyber-enabled audio and video communication are specified, to be counted toward the first year allocation.
  6. The numbers of preliminary or full proposals that may be submitted by an institution no longer depend upon whether the institution is the lead for a single institution or for a multi-institution proposal.
  7. There is clarification that salary for a staff level project manager/project administrator is an allowable cost.
  8. The program solicitation includes a competition for one new resource center for the purpose of sharing and collaboration both inside and outside the IGERT community as well as for dissemination of practices and results. Only one award for the resource center will be given. This award is anticipated to be funded as a cooperative agreement.

UM INTERNAL COMPETITION DUE DATE: March 3, 2008 ( 5 p.m.)

Synopsis of IGERT Program:

The Integrative Graduate Education and Research Traineeship (IGERT) program has been developed to meet the challenges of educating U.S. Ph.D. scientists and engineers who will pursue careers in research and education, with the interdisciplinary backgrounds, deep knowledge in chosen disciplines, and technical, professional, and personal skills to become, in their own careers, leaders and creative agents for change. The program is intended to catalyze a cultural change in graduate education, for students, faculty, and institutions, by establishing innovative new models for graduate education and training in a fertile environment for collaborative research that transcends traditional disciplinary boundaries. It is also intended to facilitate diversity in student participation and preparation, and to contribute to a world-class, broadly inclusive, and globally engaged science and engineering workforce.
