Which IRB Oversees My Research?

The school/college for which the principal investigator holds a primary appointment will determine which IRB the PI should apply to. 

PIs with a primary affiliation in the following schools/colleges/units should apply to
IRB Behavioral Sciences (IRB BehavSci):

• College of Architecture and Urban Planning
• Institute for Social Research
• Law School
• LS&A
• Office of the Provost
• Office of the Vice President for Student Services
• School of Art and Design
• School of Business Administration
• School  of Education
• School of Information
• School of Music, Theatre and Dance
• School of Natural Resources and Environment

PIs with a primary affiliation in the following schools/colleges/units should apply to
IRB Health Sciences (IRB Health):

• College of Pharmacy
• Division of Kinesiology
• School of Dentistry
• School of Nursing
• School of Public Health
• School of Social Work

There are some exceptions to this jurisdiction policy.  For example, in some cases, a particular IRB has the appropriate expertise to review a study, but it may not be the IRB indicated by the PI’s affiliation.  Detailed information regarding the exceptions to this policy can be found in the University of Michigan Operations Manual, Part 5.
