Michigan Memorial Phoenix Fund Grants 2004

Date: July 31, 2003
Subject: Michigan Memorial Phoenix Fund Grants 2004
OVPR Deadline: October 31, 2003

To Members of the University Teaching Faculty:

During the Winter Term 2004, the Michigan Memorial-Phoenix Project will award grants to support faculty research in the peaceful applications of nuclear energy, science, and technology and the associated social implications. This can include work in engineering; the physical, biological, health, and social sciences; and the humanities.

To be eligible to apply for a grant, the applicant must be a member of the University's regular teaching and/or research faculty (including Assistant, Associate, and Full Professors and Research Scientists; Librarians; Curators; and Archivists). Part-time faculty, Research Investigators, Instructors, and Lecturers with 50 percent or greater appointments, who are required to conduct research as part of their University duties, also are eligible to apply. Clinical staff members are eligible only if they have an additional appointment as a regular teaching and/or research faculty member and are required to conduct research or teach formal University courses. Doctoral students are not eligible.

Requests for $10,000 or less will be considered appropriate. Grants may cover research assistance, equipment, supplies, and field trips. The Phoenix Project will not pay the salary of the principal investigator, nor will it pay publication expenses.

The Phoenix Faculty Executive Committee will review innovative proposals that develop new peaceful uses of nuclear energy, science, and technology as their primary intent. Proposals seeking funds to purchase commercial radiopharmaceuticals for a clinical study are discouraged since this does not advance the state of the art in the nuclear sciences. Priority consideration may be given to proposals that are directly related to the development and enhancement of Phoenix programs. Among equally rated proposals, preference for awards will go to new faculty who need funding to develop concepts for external support, and established faculty who need assistance in opening a new area of research. Applications from faculty who have substantial outside support or who have received Phoenix support previously will be given lower priority. Previous award rates for proposals meeting these guidelines have averaged ~25%.

Applications for grants should be returned to the Office of the Vice President for Research, 4080 Fleming Building by Friday, October 31, 2003. Awards will be announced in November, with funding available for research during the Winter Term, 2004. Application materials and detailed instructions may be obtained from the Michigan Memorial Phoenix Project website at http://www.umich.edu/~mmpp/ or by calling Ms. Jane Ritter at 763-1290.

Sincerely,
Anthony H. Francis
