Curriculum organized for research administrators

By Suzanne Tainter, DRDA

New to research administration? Wondering where to get training? Been on the job for awhile, but never had any formal training? Looking for a refresher for those things you learned "on-the-job" ?

Queries such as these led Steve Brabbs, the training coordinator at the Division of Research Development and Administration (DRDA), to develop a recommended curriculum for research administrators.

He teamed up with project representatives at DRDA, Financial Operations staff, and veteran administrators from other units at the U-M to organize workshop offerings into a curriculum that provides the cohesive training that research administrators have been asking for.

The basic curriculum is aimed at newer administrators and those looking for refresher courses, says Brabbs.

Courses include the overview, "Introduction to Sponsored Projects" presented by DRDA and Financial Operations/Sponsored Programs. It provides the "big picture" of the sponsored projects enterprise at the U-M.

Also part of the basic offerings are several courses about the financial administration of grants and an introduction to developing project budgets.

Now some U-M schools and colleges are "piggybacking" on these basic University-wide offerings to provide school-specific information in their own courses, says Brabbs.

Intermediate courses cover topics such as working with industry sponsors, and RAIN, which is four days of more indepth training.

Courses aimed at more specialized groups include: "Finding Funding" and "Research Proposal Writing." For descriptions of the courses and online links to schedules and registration, see the training section of the U-M research Web site at: http://www.research.umich.edu/training/training.html.

The curriculum for research administrators is outlined at: http://www.research.umich.edu/training/curriculum.html
