Ten Tips for a Successful Proposal

  1. Find a funding source that matches your purpose.

  2. Read the guidelines thoroughly:

    a) attend to all requirements including content preferences, length, cost sharing, indirect cost rates, format, etc., and

    b) make sure your work addresses the priorities of the sponsor.

  3. Discuss your project with the Program Officer when you are ready to apply. Use the phone or e-mail.

  4. Write Aims/Objectives first and share with colleagues. Review with a statistician or evaluator.

  5. Make sure that you have access to the necessary collaborations, resources or subjects to complete work. Well before deadlines, obtain letters of collaboration if applicable.

  6. Develop the budget as you proceed. You will want to adjust scope of work or methods as your plans firm up.

  7. Use the Background section to support significance of your project and to show reviewers you have unique expertise and knowledge in this area.

  8. Discuss preliminary data or pilot work to show the foundation for proposed work and team expertise.

  9. When developing methodology, be sure to include rationalization and alternative procedures should you anticipate roadblocks.

  10. Include a Timeline that reflects major tasks.
