Mission: What We Do

OHRCR Mission Statement
The mission of UM OHRCR is to facilitate safe, ethical, efficient and high quality human subjects research.  We accomplish this mission through the following activities relevant to human research regulatory issues:

  • Compliance Reviews of research studies and committees
  • Education of individuals and groups engaged in the research enterprise
  • Outreach to the university research community
  • Leadership and knowledge generation


OHRCR Goals

Faculty are knowledgeable about human research regulations and skilled in developing and implementing research that is compliant with them.

The University of Michigan (UM) Office for Human Research Compliance Review (OHRCR), Institutional Review Boards (IRB) and ancillary committees relevant to human subject research conduct appropriate reviews of research projects in a timely, efficient and fair manner.

The University of Michigan human subject research community has a culture of valuing best practice in research regulatory compliance as an essential component to assure subject safety, scientific quality and the value of its work to society.

Undergraduate and graduate students, fellows and other trainees are knowledgeable about human research regulations and the methods to comply with them to the extent appropriate to their current level of education and responsibility

Subjects who participate in UM research, and the public at large, view UM investigators as conducting the most ethical research possible that maximizes subject safety.

Governmental agencies and private industry and foundations view UM as a model for the innovative, efficient, and effective practice of human subject research regulatory compliance.

University of Michigan is a national leader in discovering new knowledge and developing innovative methods that will enhance the effectiveness of human subject regulatory compliance.
