Guidelines for Units that wish to Appoint Research Professors & Research Scientists

Office of the Vice President for Research
Effective December, 1999; Updated October 2003

Any unit that wants to appoint research professors or research scientists must have established policies and guidelines for the appointment and promotion in these tracks that have been reviewed and approved by the appropriate EO as designated in the Regents Bylaws, Sec. 5.24.

Research Scientists. An academic or research unit may appoint research scientists to support the research activities of the University if a policy to authorize such appointments has been adopted by the school, college, division, or research unit in accordance with the bylaws of that unit and has been approved by the Vice President for Research.

Research Professors. An academic or research unit may appoint research professors and research associate professors to support the research activities of the University if a policy to authorize such appointments has been adopted by the school, college, division, or research unit in accordance with the bylaws of that unit and has been approved by the Vice President for Research and the Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs.

Appointment Policy Documents. Each campus unit that makes appointments to the Research Professor or Research Scientist ranks should develop a policy for carrying this out. If a unit makes appointments to both the ranks, then both the Vice President for Research and the Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs should approve the unit's policy.
