Middle English Dictionary, 2001
Now nearing completion, it has been described as "the greatest achievement in medieval scholarship in America." It offer a comprehensive analysis of lexicon and usage for the period 1100-1500. An electronic version has also been created.

Ultra-small probes that electronically stimulate single cells; research tool and possible aid in treating paralysis, blindness, and epilepsy.

Muscular Dystrophy Prevention, 1993
Animal research shows the most common form of muscular dystrophy can be prevented by inserting a ÒhealthyÓ gene into embryos.

Influenza Vaccine, 1991- present
Vaccine, easily modified to meet each new influenza strain, proven effective; licensed to Aviron, a Calif. biopharmaceutical company

Cystic Fibrosis Gene Found, 1989
Gene defects that cause cystic fibrosis identified by UM and Canadian research team.

Space Research Instruments, 1970s to present
Instrumentation developed at the Space Physics Research Laboratory, (established in 1946), has been used in many space missions, including Voyager, Pioneer, Galileo, and Galileo's probe sent into the atmosphere of Jupiter.

 

National Election Studies, 1970 - present
In 1977, the National Science Foundation formally established the (NES) as a national resource; studies of every national election since 1952

Consumer Confidence Survey,
1946 to present

Survey asks consumers about their income, debts, and buying plans; the only survey included in the U.S. Commerce DepartmentÕs index of leading economic indicators.

Defective genes that cause sickle cell anemia discovered by UM scientist.

 

National and International Honors

Nobel Prize
Professor Emeritus of Physics Martinus J.G. Veltman shared the 1999 Nobel Prize in Physics with Gerardus't Hooft for work on the quantum structure of electroweak interactions

MacArthur Fellows
Fellowships to nurture the work and creativity of exceptional individuals have been awarded to 17 UM faculty members since 1987

Pulitzer Prizes
Honor for achievements in journalism, literature, music, and theatre. Six UM faculty members have earned Pulitzer Prizes
