Networks and Professional Development Opportunities


INFORMATION NETWORKS

Research Administrators' Network
Established by DRDA in partnership with unit administrators to support Research Administrators at UM, the Network is meant to provide continuing education in the area of research administration and provide opportunities for unit administrators to interact with each other and leaders in central administration. Typical agendas for quarterly meetings include updates on current events in research at UM and the presentation of an educational topic.

DRDA Electronic Email Groups
DRDA maintains several electronic mail groups for faculty, staff, and students with specific areas of interest or responsibilities. Note that many agencies also maintain their own alert services. Visit their home pages for more information.

DRDA-NET provides the administrators of the University of Michigan updates and quick notification of changes in policies and procedures that affect grants and proposal submission, budgets, guidelines, and so forth. Also, the occasional funding announcement for broad groups of researchers, not covered by the lists below. Send mail to drda-email-requests@umich.edu to be added to DRDA-NET.

PROFESSIONAL ORGANIZATIONS

Membership in these organizations provides research administrators with opportunities to meet colleagues from other institutions with similar administrative positions. One of the benefits of this networking is to become acquainted with different models of research administration.

SRA (Society of Research Administrators)

"Founded in 1967, the Society of Research Administrators International is a nonprofit association dedicated to advancing the profession and improving the efficiency and effectiveness of research administration. Through innovative programs and a wide variety of outreach programs, SRA International continuously seeks to broaden and diversify its membership base. RAIN (Research Administrators Instructional Network) Workshop

RAIN instruction offers mastery of the processes, procedures, policies, and ethical considerations relevant to the administration of sponsored projects at the University of Michigan. RAIN will provide research administrators with the necessary framework, concepts, tools, knowledge, and networking opportunities to support the research efforts in their departments more efficiently and proactively. The course is spread over 32 hours of instruction provided by experienced administrators from the department and college level as well as central offices. RAIN is designed for individuals currently involved in some aspect of research administration at the University. The typical participant will have three to five years of experience in the administrative aspects of sponsored projects.
Note: Interest in this workshop often exceeds availability. The application process is outlined on the website.

Cost Accounting Standards
presented by Financial Operations

This course is designed for all staff with fiscal responsibilities at the University of Michigan. You will receive an overview of the federal government's OMB Circular A-21 regulations for Cost Accounting Standards and the policies for compliance at the University of Michigan. The Cost Accounting Standards and the Policy on Indirect Cost Recovery Excluded (ICRX) Expenditures apply to ALL university expenditures.

Financial Administration of Federally Sponsored Projects

An overview of the guidelines and fundamentals of handling Federal Projects within the University Description: Participants will gain awareness of the various aspects of administering Federal Projects. Discussion includes the opening of Project/Grants, concepts of cost sharing, indirect costs, cost accounting standards, A-21 monitoring, hardships, cost transfers, statement of activity and project budget report review.

Become a Certified Research Administrator

The Research Administrators Certification Council sponsors the Certified Research Administrator program. The council is a private, non-profit organization that develops and operates this program for the certification of individuals who demonstrate their understanding of the Council's Body of Knowledge. The Council bestows the designation of Certified Research Administrator (CRA) to those who meets its requirements. The designation of Certified Research Administrator (CRA) means that an individual has met the Research Administrators Certification Council's eligibility requirements and has demonstrated knowledge of the information necessary for a person to be a professional research or sponsored programs administrator.

DRDA Lending Library
