Professor Victor Strecher was named the 4th University of Michigan Distinguished University Innovator for 2010, a prize that recognizes faculty for the development of innovative technologies and the demonstration of their transformational potential.
Professor Strecher is a faculty member in the Department of Health Behavior & Health Education in the School of Public Health, where he also directs Center for Health Communications Research. He is also a professor of family medicine and, until recently, an associate director of the Comprehensive Cancer Center in the Medical School.
At the Center for Health Communications Research, Professor Strecher has assembled a multidisciplinary team to conduct research studies and demonstration projects of computer-aided, interactive multimedia programs to assess and provide health guidance to individuals. His breakthrough research led to a fundamental shift in how digital technologies are adapted to support preventative health behaviors.
In 1998, Professor Strecher launched HealthMedia, Inc., to deploy these novel technologies. HealthMedia’s success attracted the attention of Johnson & Johnson, which acquired HealthMedia in 2008 to become this health care giant’s flagship enterprise in their wellness and prevention initiative.
