Assistant Vice President
* Nick Wigginton is participating in the American Council on Education Fellows Program at Stanford University, and thus is on leave during the 2019-2020 academic year.
As assistant vice president for research and chief of staff, Dr. Wigginton works with faculty and staff to support research and scholarship across the institution. He facilitates relationships across campus, as well as with government, industry and foundations, to identify emerging opportunities, foster innovative collaborations, and develop new funding models. He also serves as the primary adviser to the Vice President for Research, and provides oversight and guidance on strategic priorities and policies within the U-M Office of the Vice President for Research.
Wigginton holds a Bachelor of Science degree in geology from Michigan State University and a Ph.D. in geosciences from Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State University. He was a postdoctoral scholar at Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne in Switzerland and visiting researcher at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory in Richland, Wash. Before joining U-M, Wigginton was a Senior Editor at Science, one of the world's premier scientific journals, which is published by the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
